What are FODMAPs: an Introduction to Cannings' NEW FODMAP Friendly Marinades!

We all know how difficult it can be to stick to a diet, whether it’s for health reasons, or just to help your body perform at its best. Sometimes cutting out certain foods can feel like you’re missing out, which is why here at Cannings we try to be as accommodating of different dietary needs as possible, with our extensive gluten free selection and products such as our Peanut Free Satay marinade.

Recently we’ve been looking into even more diet friendly options, and as part of this are very excited to announce our brand new low sugar, garlic and onion free Certified FODMAP Friendly marinade range! All the ease and deliciousness of regular marinades, now tummy friendly! Yay!


What are FODMAPs and what does “FODMAP Friendly” mean?

At this point many of you may be asking ‘what the heck are FODMAPs anyway?’. The term ‘FODMAP’ is an abbreviation referring to “Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols” - quite a mouthful, we know! According to the folks over at Monash University “Put simply, FODMAPs are a collection of short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that aren’t absorbed properly in the gut, which can trigger symptoms in people with IBS. FODMAPs are found naturally in many foods and food additives.


So basically FODMAPs are a group of sugars found in certain foods that cause some people to experience digestive distress and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome - not fun. Cue the Low FODMAP diet! This is not really a “classic” diet, as it advises on foods to avoid rather than giving a set eating plan, and unfortunately many marinated meats make it onto this list! We know that many of our customers love the added flavour of marinades, and this is exactly why we decided we wanted to offer a selection of tummy friendly marinades for our FODMAP sensitive customers.


Can I still eat FODMAP Friendly foods if I’m not sensitive to FODMAPs?

Absolutely! Our FODMAP Friendly products definitely do not compromise on taste, and are suitable for everyone. As a bonus, our low FODMAP marinades are low in sugar, so are great for those trying to reduce their sugar intake!

They are also free from garlic and onion, so are great for people with garlic and onion allergies!


What flavours do you have available in your FODMAP Friendly range?

We’re starting out with two delicious flavours in our FODMAP Friendly range: a zesty Lemon Pepper, and a sweet and smokey Chipotle and Maple. These are rolling out at all of our stores on selected cuts, however if there’s something else you’d like to try it on simply ask one of our friendly staff as they can marinate on request!


A low FODMAP diet is not a lifetime diet, if you are considering a low FODMAP diet, you should consult a registered dietician first.
