More than meats the eye

Careers at Cannings.

Join us...

All training is provided at Cannings so if you bring a curiosity and willingness to learn you’ll fit right in. A passion for food or experience in hospitality or retail is always a plus by no means a requirement. We always see enthusiasm, attitude and team-spirit wins by a country mile anyway!

Career Pathways

We may be called ‘butchers’, but less than 15% of our team are qualified butchers, the rest are customer service professionals, apprentices, and operational or support staff. Across our nine store locations and support office, Cannings has opportunities for anyone wanting to learn more about the industry, work with food, pursue a butcher qualification or even manage a retail location. We pride ourselves on nurturing careers at Cannings, with all location managers (and many of the support team) sourced internally.

Front Of House

Learn customer service, safe food handling and a wealth of food knowledge. Absorb industry knowledge from qualified butchers.

Apprentice Butcher

The first step towards mastery of craft and a valuable trade qualification. Small cohort sizes and hands-on training.

Qualified Butcher

A qualification with truly global reach. Cannings is always on the lookout for existing talent or chefs looking to make an industry jump.

Store Manager

If you’ve got business management ambitions and an eye for how all the details work together, a Cannings store could be yours to guide.

Employee Experience

Be a Hit at BBQs

Don’t be surprised if you start getting invited to more BBQs. If your staff discount wasn’t enough, your newfound meat and meat preparation knowledge will make you an indispensable invite to any BBQ.

Skills for Anywhere

For every meat industry skill you learn, you’ll also gain experience applicable to all kinds of roles and industries, from retail, sales, hospitality, corporate and beyond. We hold ourselves to a high standard of communication, attention to detail and client relationships – which is a plus in any field!

Jobs for Humans

We invite and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and identities. We also understand that work means different things for people at different life stages, so we offer flexibility and stability where you need it (whether you’re a parent/guardian or student). First job, or total career change – we have a role for your goals.

We Value Collaboration

One of our core values at Cannings is collaboration. We believe in elevating one-another and are proud to celebrate our tall poppies as they develop and grow with us! We encourage the sharing of ideas and sourcing the best solutions from the broadest spread of people, no matter their role or tenure.

We have great, ethical free range products and our support of animal welfare aligns with my values.

I feel supported to grow and learn, building my product knowledge, customer service skills and more.

We’ve got a great supportive culture. We’re professional and take our work seriously, but we can share a laugh and have fun together while we work.

Purpose

Be a force multiplier

Cannings is and always has been an ethos driven business. Our ‘Free Range or Nothing’ philosophy champions high welfare meat consumption as an ethical option yielding better results for nutrition and the environment.

As a B Corp Certified Business (Australia’s only butcher to hold this certification!) it’s integral to our mission to demonstrate our commitment to local communities and the environment. We support Animal Welfare Organizations and local nonprofits with regular donations, and all of our store locations are Carbon Neutral (using renewable energy and offsetting unavoidable impacts through reforestation & biodiversity initiatives.)

Just know, every day of work with Cannings has ripples.
